Workplace drug testing is most relevant where impairment could create serious risks — including driving, machinery, construction, logistics, manufacturing, utilities and security.
But testing is not simply a matter of testing everyone and acting on a positive result. Employers need to consider what substance they are testing for, which specimen to use, the detection window, and what happens after a result is returned.
Main types of workplace drug testing
Urine testing
Urine is widely used for workplace screening because it is relatively affordable, established and suitable for a broad range of drug panels.
Pros
Cost-effective for routine screening
Established laboratory methods
Broad range of substances
Longer detection windows for many drugs
Cons
A positive result does not prove current impairment
Detection can continue after effects have worn off
Collection requires privacy and chain-of-custody controls
Samples need validity and adulteration checks
Oral fluid (saliva) testing
Oral-fluid testing is easier to collect on site and is useful when recent drug use is the main concern.
Pros
Simple, quick collection
Less invasive than blood
Difficult to substitute or dilute
Better suited to recent use than hair testing
Cons
Shorter detection window
Collection conditions can affect results
Some substances are harder to detect
Positive screens should be confirmed
Hair testing
Hair testing provides a much longer look-back period and can be useful when the concern is repeated or historical use.
Pros
Detection can extend weeks or months
Easy to store and transport
Less affected by dilution
Cons
More expensive
Not suitable for very recent use
External contamination can affect interpretation
Hair treatments and colour can complicate results
Does not establish impairment on a particular day
Blood testing
Blood testing is more invasive but can be useful when very recent exposure is the key question.
Pros
Stronger indication of recent exposure
Can provide quantitative results
Useful in some clinical and post-incident investigations
Cons
Invasive
Short detection window for many substances
Requires trained clinical staff
Less practical for routine workforce screening
Alcohol testing
Alcohol testing is slightly different because breath testing can help assess current alcohol presence and impairment risk.
This distinction matters for drugs too. A positive drug test shows that a substance or metabolite was detected; it does not automatically show that someone was impaired at the time of testing. THC, for example, can remain detectable in urine for days or weeks after use.
What substances matter in Egypt?
There is no single figure that captures drug use across Egypt. Different studies measure different populations.
Egypt's Fund for Combating and Treating Addiction and Abuse reported that, among people using its treatment services in the first half of 2025, synthetic drugs such as Strox, Voodoo, Boda/Powder and Shabo were prominent, followed by cannabis, heroin, tramadol and polysubstance use.
A separate Fund report from March 2025, based on people contacting its treatment hotline, reported cannabis/hashish in 51% of cases, followed by tramadol, heroin and synthetic drugs.
UNODC has also identified cannabis, pharmaceutical opioids such as tramadol, amphetamine-type stimulants and heroin among the main substances of concern in Egypt, alongside emerging synthetic cannabinoids.
For employers, the key point is that a standard drug panel may not cover every relevant substance. The testing panel should reflect the risks, workforce and industry involved.
Drug testing as part of occupational health
Testing works best as part of a wider occupational-health programme.
A good programme can help employers:
Reduce safety risks in jobs involving vehicles, machinery, heights, electricity or hazardous materials.
Identify problems earlier, allowing workers to access medical assessment, counselling or treatment.
Apply a consistent policy rather than testing only after an incident or suspicion.
Protect workers and employers by using clear procedures for confirmation, medical review, confidentiality and follow-up.
A positive screening result should not automatically be treated as proof of addiction, misconduct or current impairment.
What a good testing programme involves
A practical programme follows five stages:
Policy → Collection → Screening → Confirmation → Follow-up
The policy defines who is tested, when and for what substances. Collection protects sample integrity. Screening provides the initial result. Confirmation supports a final result where required. Follow-up determines the appropriate occupational-health, HR or clinical response.
On-site drug testing across Egypt
For employers with large or shift-based workforces, sending employees off site for testing can create unnecessary disruption.
On-site testing brings the screening process directly to your workplace across Egypt, making it easier to coordinate testing around shifts, workforce size and operational requirements.
Whether you need pre-employment testing, periodic screening, safety-sensitive workforce testing or post-incident testing, the right approach depends on the risks and substances relevant to your organization.
